What You’ll Learn
New Headway Pre-Intermediate: English B1.2 Pre-Intermediate Course Overview
Chapter 8: Do’s and Don’ts
Learn to express obligations and advice with have (got) to (e.g., “You have to pay bills,” “I’ve got to go”), should (e.g., “You should talk to your boss”), and must (e.g., “You must go to the dentist”). Expand vocabulary with collocations and practice dialogues at the doctor’s.
Chapter 9: Going Places
Explore time and conditional clauses (e.g., as soon as, when, while, if). Learn how to express plans and hypothetical situations (e.g., “If I pass my exam, I will…”). Build vocabulary with “hot verbs” and roleplay practical situations, such as checking in at a hotel.
Chapter 10: Scared to Death
Master verb patterns (e.g., manage to do, used to do, go walking). Practice using infinitives to express purpose (e.g., “I went to the shop to buy some shoes”) and add clarity to sentences (e.g., “I need something to eat”). Learn how to use -ed and -ing adjectives (e.g., “I’m bored,” “This movie is boring”).
Chapter 11: Things That Changed the World
Understand how to use the passive voice to describe facts and events (e.g., “Coca-Cola is enjoyed all over the world,” “It was invented in 1886”). Build confidence using verbs and nouns that often go together while interpreting notices.
Chapter 12: Dreams and Reality
Explore the second conditional for hypothetical situations (e.g., “If I were a princess, I’d live in a castle”). Learn how to use might to express possibility (e.g., “I might go to America”). Practice using phrasal verbs and deepen your understanding of social expressions.
Chapter 13: Earning a Living
Learn the present perfect continuous to discuss ongoing actions (e.g., “I’ve been living on the streets for a year”). Compare it with the present perfect simple (e.g., “He’s been running” vs. “He’s run five miles”). Expand vocabulary with word formation exercises, adverbs, and telephoning phrases.
Chapter 14: Love You and Leave You
Explore the past perfect to describe events that happened before a specific point in the past (e.g., “They had met only one week earlier”). Learn to report statements (e.g., “She said that she loved John”) and practice conversations for saying goodbye.
