What You’ll Learn
New Headway Intermediate: English B1.3 Intermediate Course Overview
Chapter 1: It’s a Wonderful World!
Master auxiliary verbs (do, be, have) and explore how they support various tenses, questions, and negatives (e.g., “What did you do last night?”, “Cows don’t eat meat”). Learn to name tenses (present, past, present perfect), practice short answers (e.g., “Yes, I did”), and use everyday social expressions to communicate fluently.
Chapter 2: Get Happy!
Sharpen your understanding of present tenses, distinguishing between simple and continuous forms (e.g., “She usually drives to work, but today she’s walking”). Learn the present passive to describe actions (e.g., “We are paid with the money people give”). This chapter also covers sports vocabulary, numbers, and dates to enrich your conversations.
Chapter 3: Telling Tales
Learn to use past tenses effectively, including simple, continuous, and perfect forms (e.g., “He danced and sang,” “He was laughing when he saw the baby,” “Had you heard it before?”). Understand the past passive to describe historical events or literature (e.g., “A Farewell to Arms was written by Ernest Hemingway”). Build confidence in giving opinions about art and literature.
Chapter 4: Doing the Right Thing
Explore modal verbs to express obligation and permission (e.g., “Children have to go to school,” “I can stay at my friend’s house”). Practice requests and offers while refining your understanding of should and must for advice and rules (e.g., “You should take traveler’s cheques,” “You must write to us every week”). Learn nationality words to describe origins or identities.
Chapter 5: On the Move
Focus on future forms like going to and will to express plans and intentions (e.g., “I’m going to buy some,” “I’ll get a loaf”). Use the present continuous for fixed arrangements (e.g., “We’re playing tennis this afternoon”). Build vocabulary around weather and travel to navigate everyday scenarios with ease.
Chapter 6: I Just Love It!
Learn to ask and answer questions with like (e.g., “What’s she like?” “What does she look like?” “What does she like doing?”). Practice verb patterns (e.g., “I enjoyed meeting your friends,” “You made me feel welcome”). Expand your descriptive skills for food, towns, people, and sounds, enabling richer conversations.
